There are a range of useful websites and resources to support you in your understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal culture, history and current issues. We've selected a few to get you started.

AIATSIS

As the website states, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is ‘Australia’s only national institution focused exclusively on the diverse history, cultures and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.’ Research, education, family history research guidance and caring for collections are just some of the functions performed by AIATSIS. If this comprehensive site is not enough for you, there is a shop with further publications and resources.

Australians Together

This non-profit uses stories to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians together. The website has a range of resources for students, teachers and workplaces. While some content requires payment, there are plenty of freely available articles and definitions to further your knowledge.

Common Ground

Common Ground offers very accessible articles and stories on a range of topics, such as place names, sacred trees, legal systems, symbols and explanations of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Check out the Bedtime Stories section, featuring stories recorded with community members from the Mparntwe (Alice Springs) area.

Welcome to Country

Welcome to Country describes itself as ‘an informative portal for anything and everything related to Aboriginal land, culture and people.’ As well as plenty of information on history and culture, there are breaking news stories and opinion pieces on topics such as Australia Day and the National Anthem.

Share Our Pride

An innovative website designed to give a glimpse of life from the perspective of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. Visitors to the Share our Pride site are invited to take an ‘awareness-raising journey’ in five chapters, answering some common questions and building awareness on topics such as respectful relationships, showing respect and acknowledging Country.
