Back by popular demand, the St Vincent’s Wellbeing Skills: Group Program is running again in October, kicking off on Thursday 10 October at 10am. If you’re over 65 (or 55 and older for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People) and are looking for some mental health support, please consider booking yourself a place!
Run by St Vincent’s Healthy Aging Service (HAS) and funded by the Australian Government under the Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network, this is a fantastic opportunity for people looking to upskill their mental health strategies and meet like-minded people in a kind and supportive environment.
The course will be running at Ivanhoe Library each Thursday for 6 weeks and will be facilitated by mental health clinicians who have tailored a program specifically to help combat anxiety, low mood and stress.
Topics covered include stress, sleep difficulties, relaxation techniques, and self-compassion, and attendees will leave the course not only with some excellent new tools in their emotional toolbox, but with new connections and friendships -- some groups have even started a book club!
If you or anyone you know could benefit from joining the Wellbeing Skills: Group Program please don’t hesitate to book a spot!
For more information or to reserve your place, please contact St Vincent’s Healthy Ageing Service on phone: 03 9231 8443 or email: has@svha.org.au
Group programs not your thing?
Check out some of these psychology and wellbeing titles in our catalogue:
The power of now : a guide to spiritual enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle
Also available as an eBook (Libby)
The first time I heard of Eckhart Tolle’s self-help classic, it was from a library patron about 12 years ago who quite simply said ‘it changed my life’. If you’re a staunch atheist I’d steer clear of this one, but if you have some spiritual leanings then it really is quite incredible . . . and indeed – lifechanging. Highly recommended.
The Resilience Project: finding happiness through gratitude, empathy & mindfulness by Hugh Van Cuylenburg
Also available as eBook (Libby), eAudio (BorrowBox), Audiobook (MP3).
This book by an Australian author has been on my ‘to read’ list for a long time. Inspired by the author’s experiences volunteering with underprivileged children in India, it has an excellent rating on Goodreads (4.3 stars from over 10 thousand readers!) and there are plenty of copies available in our system! Definitely worth checking out.
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, mind, and body in the healing of trauma by Bessel Van der Kolk
Also available as eBook (BorrowBox), eAudio (Libby), eAudio (BorrowBox).
This game-changing book is well worth a read for anyone who may have suffered significant trauma in their lives. Not without its controversies (I struggled with the part about war crimes personally) it remains an iconic read in the area of psychology and trauma.
The Untethered Soul: The journey beyond yourself by Michael A. Singer
Also available as eAudio (Libby), eBook (Libby)
Another stone-cold classic in the world of spiritual self-help books, I listened to this title as an audiobook while driving to and from work. Short and incredibly powerful, it is something I will definitely read again. Try it as an audiobook while driving, jogging or relaxing and see for yourself!
