What happens when libraries and hospitals collaborate? This blog tells all…

Imagine being a stroke patient and needing an ultrasound to examine your blood vessels. You would want the most advanced technology for this, right?

Austin Hospital Sonographer, Warwick Park, needed to create a mount for an ultrasound probe and radio sensors for this exact purpose.

‘The original design had one arm, but we wanted two to help track the blood vessels in someone’s head,’ Warwick said.

‘We use a transcranial doppler ultrasound for stroke patients to see if their blood vessels are narrowed or blocked’.

The Austin Hospital initially printed a prototype, however Warwick advised they needed to improve the design and print more. Warwick advised his colleague mentioned Ivanhoe Library have a 3D printer which led him to the library’s Maker Space.

'I completed the 3D printer training a couple of weeks ago at the library, which was great. Then I came to the library to print the prototype’, Warwick said.

The result was a 3D printed mount which can now be used for patients at the Austin Hospital!
