Geoffrey Treacher Grant
Anzac Day is a time when Australians come together to honour our service personnel and the sacrifices they have made. We remember the more than 1.5 million men and women who have served our country in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
The word “Anzac” has a unique meaning in our culture. Regulations are in place to ensure this historic word is treated with respect and dignity. Its use in official or corporate environments requires permission from the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs.
Geoffrey Treacher Grant from Eltham, left Australia in May 1915, at 19 years old, as part of the 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died three months later at Gallipoli. An only child, he was born in New Zealand and came to Australia with his parents when we was nine. He had been employed as a clerk prior to his enlistment and was active in establishing a Scouts group in Eltham.
The Anzac Portal provides information about Australia’s military and service history through the experiences of Australian veterans and their families during wartime and peace. It includes educational materials for primary and secondary schools. There are over 100 resources to explore including oral history interviews and short films.
On Monday, April 25, may we take time to reflect about family members and those from our local community who have served. To find a service in Melbourne and in your area visit RSL Victoria for updates.
