Age Guide: primary school upwards
Many children love to nurture animals if given the chance. Feeding birds is one way you can practice nurturing and kindness. If possible, make opportunities for children to help care for birds by filling a clean bird feeder with fresh seed and hanging it in the garden.
Children who help you in this endeavour will start to feel ownership in helping the birds, which can bolster self-worth, encourage the child to continue nurturing behaviours, and provide a positive connection to the natural world.
Also, each October you can participate in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. It takes 20 minutes to count the birds you see in your garden or park.
