Perhaps you have thought of yourself as a bit of a 'Margaret', maybe you're more of a 'David', or it could be that you're really missing watching At the Movies!  YPRL to the rescue with movie club! You can borrow a DVD copy to view before the meeting, and then chat about it with other film buffs. If you're interested, ask staff at Ivanhoe Library to reserve you a copy from the Movie Club set.

At its April meeting, the Ivanhoe Library Movie Club discussed Supernova, a British movie dealing with early-onset dementia, starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. There was general agreement that the movie dealt well with the effect of the disease on a loving relationship. It showed the pain for both the sufferer and their a deeply loved long-term partner.

The group compared this movie with others with a similar theme, such as Still Alice and, more recently, The Father. Some felt that Supernova did not show the effect of the disease on the sufferer as explicitly as it might have done, and so was less confronting.

The acting is of a high standard and parts of the movie are set in the beautiful Lake District in northern England.

The Next Movie Club meeting will be on Tuesday 10 May at 5.00pm in Meeting Room 1, Upper Ground Floor, Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub. The group will discuss the New Zealand movie Cousins.

Some of movies we  talked about here are available to borrow with your YPRL library membership!
