National Simultaneous Storytime 2024!
It’s that time of the year again to come together for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). Join us at your local YPRL library to celebrate another year of children’s reading and literacy on the special day:
Wednesday 22 May at 12.00pm.*
As part of NSS, we will be joining thousands of children and special storytime guests across the country reading the beautiful picture book, Bowerbird Blues, by Australian author and illustrator, Aura Parker.
We have events and activities across each of our library branches and hubs, and we would love to see you there! You can find out more about each event on our events page.
*Please note the starting times may vary for each library branch due to capacity and pre-planned events.
What is National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)?
NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family day cares, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
Now in its 24th successful year, it is a fun and engaging event that aims to promote the value of reading, literacy and books, as well as spotlighting an Australian author. The book chosen explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas for school-aged children.
About the book:
Bowerbird loves BLUE. Magnificent cobalt. Brilliant, vibrant BLUE! But something is missing. What could it be? This picture book from Aura Parker stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for BLUE!
It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city.
He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower—a mix of natural and unnatural objects—attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.
