Today is Safer Internet Day!
Which means it’s time to #StartTheChat about online safety. Join us in creating a safer online community and help improve everyone’s online experiences.
Safer Internet Day has been running every year since 2004. It began as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project and has since become a global event. The goal is to "raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns" (saferinternetday.org), and it works best when everyone joins in to make a difference.
Here in Australia, Safer Internet Day is hosted by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, and this year they are launching a range of resources to help us #StartTheChat about the importance of online safety.
Tune in at 9 am for a storytime session with Jimmy Rees (aka Jimmy Giggle) as he introduces us to a brand new picture book called Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5. Or join in with Lah-Lah and Buzz the Bandleader as they sing along to a new song called My Family Rules.
The eSafety Commissioner is also releasing new research on the Digital Lives of Aussie Teens, along with a virtual classroom webinar for primary schools, and a webinar for parents and carers about online drama and cyberbullying.
To help you start the chat, there are a range of resources, tips, and activities available on the eSafety Commissioner website.
Finally, YPRL are hosting an online event on 11 February with cybersecurity expert Remy Coll, that offers basic online computer security information for families. To register, visit our events page.
Although Safer Internet Day only comes around once a year, it's never too late to #StartTheChat!
