Did you know that Eltham was first developed south of the railway station?

Holloway’s new township of Little Eltham adjoining the government township of Eltham on the Yarra River was first advertised for sale in half acre lots in 1851.

Many sites of historical and cultural value since European settlement are accessible in a walk starting at Eltham Library.  These points of interest mapped out on the Walking Maps website has now been produced in a handy brochure by Nillumbik Shire Council working with Eltham District Historical Society. The Little Eltham Heritage Walk brochure includes a colour map, clearly marked with points of interest with short descriptions and photos.

Sites include the Eltham Justice Precinct which includes Eltham’s oldest public building the Court House opened in 1860, the Eltham Hotel and St Margaret's Anglican Church.

Photographs from the EDHS collection include those from the Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph collection held in partnership with Yarra Plenty Regional Library.

Grab your family and friends this summer and step back in time.

Walking strengthens our bodies, calms our minds and lifts our spirits. But it does so much more than this. Our vision, hearing, respiration, sleep, cognition, memory, blood pressure, sense of smell and balance (to name a few) are all enhanced by how we walk. Annabel Streets shares the thrill of 52 walking styles, explaining the latest science behind each one, and providing practical tips for making the most of your daily steps.

Thinking on my feet: the small joy of putting one foot in front of another by Kate Humble, 2018

Thinking on My Feet tells the story of Kate's walking year - shining a light on the benefits of this simple activity. Kate's inspiring narrative not only records her walks (and runs) throughout a single year, but also charts her feelings and impressions throughout - capturing the perspectives that only a journey on foot allows - and shares the outcomes: a problem solved, a mood lifted, an idea or opportunity borne. This book will inspire you to change your perspective by applying walking to your daily endeavours.
