Bringing our communities together
YPRL is a place that is open, accessible, inclusive, and free to all residents of Victoria. We program events that encourage the community to come together and form connections and networks, over a chat or a simple activity.
We are proud to host programs that let our communities celebrate and share their culture with each other.
When you visit one of our library branches, either in person or online, staff are here to help you find what you’re looking for, whether it be an essential piece of information, assistance with our technology, or a recommendation for a great book or film. We provide comfortable, safe spaces for browsing, studying, reading, and informal meetings.
YPRL are proud to support a variety of community conversation groups who meet in our spaces and learn whilst creating ongoing connections and friendships with others. Carer morning teas are regularly hosted throughout the year to provide support and connection for carers. Book groups meet regularly in our spaces to connect and discuss their latest read. We provide regular sessions for seniors to meet, chat and share a cuppa.
YPRL provides an Outreach Services vehicle that visits nursing homes, retirement villages, and assisted living accommodation facilities on a 3-week cycle. This service is designed for ambulatory people who are not able to visit their local library branch, but who would still like to enjoy the sociability of choosing their own library materials, and meeting staff and other borrowers. The YPRL Home Library Service is a free and convenient way for housebound residents and their carers to borrow library materials. Once borrowing preferences are ascertained, members will be matched up with a suitable volunteer who will deliver library materials to their home on a monthly basis.
Throughout the year, YPRL program a variety of diverse events to connect with all areas of our community. Some examples of past programming have included talks and panel discussions on a variety of topics, special children’s storytime sessions, and activities that challenge gender stereotypes as part of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign for gender equality and the prevention of violence against women. This year for Harmony Week, YPRL focussed on celebrating culture by highlighting two things that bring us together: food and dancing.
Libraries After Dark is hosted at selected YPRL venues every Thursday night until 10 pm. These evenings offer free entertainment, a chance to meet new people, and light refreshments in a comfortable relaxed atmosphere. There are regular performances, music, games and film screenings. Workshops on topics such as crafting and resume help are also a feature.
